First Nations Program

The First Nations Graduation Program is a unique and innovative aboriginal education program.

The program:
  • integrates First Nations culture into the curriculum
  • provides culturally relevant and student-centred learning opportunities
  • Prepares students for careers in exciting fields including First Nations Arts, video productions and computer graphics
  • prepares students for their Grade 12 Graduation certificate
  • involves the community through local First Nations artists, cultural instructors, community members and organizations and Elders.
The students:
  • Develop a connection to the community
  • Are recognized for their individual talents
  • Experience student-centred learning
Connection to community is a priority of our program. Students participate in career fairs, field trips, attend First Nations community events and partner with local First Nations Artists to instruct art classes and meet with local Aboriginal organizations.

Who Should Consider the Program?

  • School aged students, grades 10 to 12.
  • Adults over 19 who require Grade 12 graduation.
This program is September to June.
Monday to Thursday, 8:45 am - 3:00 pm
Fridays, 8:45 am - 11:30 am

Courses available

Students choose courses that best fit their learning styles and needs. The core program courses include:
  • Communications and English
  • Essentials or Principles of Math
  • BC First Nations Studies
  • First Nations Art
  • First Nations Leadership
  • Physical Education
Other hands-on electives such as Media Arts, Sustainable Resources and Carpentry are available.

The Teacher: Yolonda Skelton

Yolonda Skelton (Loni) is the teacher/program coordinator of our First Nations Graduation program. She is a First Nations teacher from the Gitanmaax Band in the Hazelton area. Loni has a Bachelor of Arts degree, and is a 1999 graduate of the S.F.U. Faculty of Education Professional Development Program. Loni has been working with First Nations students on Haida Gwaii throughout her teaching career.
