American Sign Language Preparatory Program

The ASL Preparatory Program is an introduction to American Sign Language and deaf culture. Based on the principles of second language acquisition, students learn to recognize various visual grammatical features of the language and develop beginning level vocabulary.

The Preparatory Program includes 135 hours of classroom instruction with additional non-instructional assessment time. This program is presented in four sections. Students are assessed throughout and receive a report after each level. A certificate is awarded after the successful completion of the program.

Students interested in learning about deaf culture as well as a few basic signs and gestures may take ASL Preparatory Level 1 as an individual course. Only a report is issued on completion.

Applicants registering for the ASL Preparatory Program are required to complete an application form.

The American Sign Language Preparatory Program is a certificate program recognised throughout BC. Download the ASL Preparatory course outline.
