Graduation Requirements

Adult Graduation

Students 19 and over who enroll in the BC Adult Graduation Dogwood require 20 credits.

1 Language Arts 12 .............. 4 credits
1 Math 11 ............................. 4 credits
3 Grade 12 courses ............... 12 credits

or

2 Grade 12 courses ............... 8 credits
1 Socials Studies 11 or
BC First Nations 12 ............. 4 credits

Dogwood Graduation Requirements

Students under 19 must fulfill the 2004 Graduation Program requirements, completing 80 credits from grades 10, 11 & 12. Of the 80 credits for graduation, at least 16 must be at the Grade 12 level, including a Grade 12 Language Arts course. In order to graduate with a Dogwood (BC Graduation), every student in the Graduation Program has to pass certain basic courses, including English, Mathematics and Science. Who is eligible for the BC Adult Graduation Diploma?

You are eligible if you are 19 years or older as of July 1, 2009. If you are 18 and have been out of school for at least a year, you may be admitted into the Adult Graduation Program only with approval.

2004 Graduation Program

BC’s secondary school students begin working on their graduation requirements in Grade 10. In order to graduate, they must complete specified courses and write at least five provincial exams.

Students have choice and flexibility in how they meet the remaining requirements.

Graduation Transitions is one of the mandatory requirements for graduation. It replaces the Graduation Portfolio Assessment.

To graduate students need 80 credits.
  • 48 credits from required courses
  • 28 credits from elective courses
  • 4 credits from Graduation Transitions

Placement and Assessment

Math and English and prior learning assessments are occasionally recommended by the counsellor prior to enrolling in a course or program. Appointments for an assessment can be arranged with the office reception on an individual basis.
  • Math & English Placement - $50
  • Prior Learning Assessment - $50
Computer and typing assessments are done on a weekly basis. Computer assessments vary from basic to advanced and generally take from 1 to 2 hours. Typing assessments take about 20 to 30 minutes. Contact the office reception to arrange an appointment and according to availability of computer lab.
  • Computer Skills Assessments - $35 - $60
  • Typing Tests - $25

Personal Learning Plan

Your Personal Learning Plan helps you to set your learning objectives and determine the courses you require to graduate. To receive credit for all your previous schooling, please be certain to bring your transcripts, resumes and other relevant documentation when you meet with our advisor. You will also require proof of BC residency when registering.



Steps to Register for Academic Programs

New Students not presently attending a K-12 school in BC
  1. Make an appointment to attend an Information Session with our academic advisor, Bonnie Benning. Bring in all documentation including report cards, transcripts, certificates as well as work-related training.
  2. Complete and sign a Personal Learning Plan with a counselor.
  3. Show proof of BC residency (either BC license, CARE card, hydro bill)
  4. If required, arrange for an assessment.
  5. Pay any fees and text deposits for the courses enrolled in. (A post-dated cheque or credit card is required for text deposits.)
NOTE: Distributed Learning students taking online courses must also register for the Learning Strategies course and arrange a date to attend the mandatory orientation session.

If you are not attending another school and are enroling in the Academic Program for the first time, contact our office at 391-9002 to attend an Information Session with our counselor. All students under the age of 19 MUST have the Student Parent Roles forms signed by a parent or guardian along with the Personal Learning Plan – All Programs.

Students previously registered with Westshore Centre

If you have previously completed a Personal Learning Plan with WestShore Centre, then simply contact the main office to register and pay applicable fees and postdated text deposits. All changes to your Personal Learning Plan must be approved and signed.

NOTE: If first time taking a Distributed Learning online course, students must also register for the Learning Strategies course and arrange a date to attend the mandatory orientation session.

Students enrolled in another school (cross enroled)

Students who are attending another school who:
  • Want to take another course not available at their current school
  • Want to finish a partially completed a course
  • Want to take a paper-based or online option for a course
MUST complete a Cross Enrolment Learning Plan and have this signed by their school counselor as well as their parent or guardian. All parts of the form must be completed and signed before consideration for enrolment. Please review this form for available courses.

Course Changes

When a course seminar is cancelled or changed, WestShore Centre will provide you with alternate learning options for that course.

Withdrawing from a course

Non-attendance does not constitute withdrawal from a course. Students must notify the WestShore Centre office of a course withdrawal, in person, by phone or in writing or notify their teacher. Textbooks should be returned when withdrawing to avoid the text deposit being processed at the end of the course.

Textbooks

Most courses require a textbook or manual. Students require a postdated text deposit for books or manuals used in a classroom scheduled course. All students pay a postdated text deposit for books or manuals used in any distributed learning or classroom instructed courses. Please check our website or contact our office for the list of text deposit fees. Postdated payments are not cashed and will be returned if the book(s) are returned within 2 weeks of the course completion or withdrawal. If book(s) are returned later than two weeks after the course completion or withdrawal, Westshore Centre will process the payment. For scheduled classroom courses, your teacher will provide the required texts by the second week of the course. For online courses, students will be supplied with the first module of materials at orientation, and will be required to pick up book(s) after the completion of the first module.



Fees

There are no registration or tuition fees if you are a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and a BC resident. We will require proof of BC residency when you register. ie. BC drivers license, CARE card, hydro bill.

Tuition fees may apply for non-BC residents and International students.

Fees for International students registered in the Sooke School District International Program are $500 per course.

Out of district International students: $750 per course

All students pay a postdated text deposit. Text deposits vary per course. Post-dated cheques or a credit card are suitable for the text deposit.
